San Marcos, TX - Hays County

Population (2000 Census): 34,733
San Marcos is located 25 miles south of Austin. It is the seat of Hays County, and is situated in the southeastern part of the county. Prior to becoming the hub of Anglo-American settlement in the area, San Marcos had been the site of several attempts at Spanish colonization. During these came the establishment of San Xavier missions in 1755, which were relocated within the following year. In 1808 a settlement was attempted by the Spanish governor of Texas, but Indian raids and floods caused the settlement to be abandoned in 1812. The first Anglo-American settlers in the vicinity came in late 1846. Not long after, the first store and post office were opened.
Hays County was organized March 1, 1848, with San Marcos as its county seat. The town’s center was planned out in a 640-acre section of a land grant, of which possession had been taken in 1851. The town soon became a center for commercial trade between farmers, ranchers, and coastal merchants. It was also known for ginning and the milling of products of local agriculture.
The town’s population boomed following the Civil War, and with the arrival of the International-Great Northern Railroad in 1881.
Today, vacationers enjoy the peace and outdoor activities of the San Marcos River, as well as the more bustling setting of landscaped outlet malls.
