There are so many reasons why Austin, Texas has become such a popular place to live! Located in Central Texas, Austin is the state capital as well as the county seat of Travis County and lies along the north bank of the Colorado River within 200 miles of Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Famous for an average of 300 days of sunshine each year, along with the numerous lakes in the area, plus dramatic terrain including 16,000 acres of dedicated parkland, recreational activities and sports abound here. Austin is known as a highly educated city, with the University of Texas as well as 6 other colleges and universities attracting technology, research projects, and politics. We also benefit from the entertainment and cultural activities that being recognized as the Live Music Capital of the World affords us. The Aqua Festival is held each year in late summer.
Austin was chosen as the permanent capital city of the Republic of Texas in 1839, and named for Stephen F. Austin, who was known as the “Father of Texas” and had founded Anglo-American Texas. Located at the eastern edge of the Hill Country and Edwards Plateau, Austin was the ideal location due to its beauty natural resources, rich blacklands, scenic hills, and central location. Austin’s earlier years were filled with political turmoil since the area, with its remote locale away from major population hubs, was vulnerable to attack by Indians and Mexican troops.
A well-known attraction of the area is the nation’s largest urban bat colony, which can be found under the Congress Avenue bridge in the summer months. Several informational booths in the city have information on the times and places to watch for bats.
