Round Rock, TX - Williamson County

Population (2000 Census): 61,136
Round Rock is located 16 miles north of downtown Austin in south central Williamson County. The city was originally established around 1850 and named Brushy Creek, due to its location on the north bank of Brushy Creek, where blacksmith Jacob M. Harrell had a shop in 1848. The name was officially changed to Round Rock in 1854, after a large round rock in the bed of Brushy Creek, off of which Thomas C. Oatts, the town’s first postmaster, and Harrell fished together regularly.
Round Rock prospered after the railroad’s coming, and within a year or so, a number of businesses appeared. These included offices, hotels, a lime plant, broom factory, and a couple of newspapers. Famed outlaw Sam Bass was attracted by the town’s prosperity in 1878. That same year, following a shootout, he was captured and died. He is commemorated at Round Rock’s annual Frontier Days celebration.
For over half of the 20th century, Round Rock’s population remained stable. As the town began to grow in the 1960’s, a considerable amount of preservation and restoration work took place to the old limestone structures of “Old” Round Rock. In the 1970’s, the town became a site for manufacture and industry, attracting larger numbers of residents who were drawn by Austin’s expansion.
