Manchaca, TX - Travis County
Population (1990 estmated): 4,700
Manchaca is located 10 miles southwest of Austin in southwestern Travis County. The community was named for nearby Manchaca Springs, which was so named as José Antonio Menchaca had once camped there.
The town’s first post office opened in 1851 and was known as Manchac House. This was 2 miles south of the town’s present site and was discontinued the following year. Between June 1874 and May 1875, another post office was operating, called Manchac. It wasn’t until the rail line was completed in 1881 that the community gained its third post office, this time called Manchaca (which is pronounced “Manshack”).
Manchaca was a shipping location for cotton, grain, posts, and lumber in the mid-1880’s, and in the 1890’s obtained a school, hotel, and church.
During the 1970’s, the town’s population reached a low of 36 residents. Thanks to development in the 1980’s, Manchaca experienced growth and by 1990, the population had reached approximately 4,700.
