Leander, TX - Williamson County

Population (2000 Census): 7,596
Leander is located 5 miles north of Austin in southwestern Williamson County. It was originally established July 17, 1882, and finally incorporated in 1978, with Joe Bates as the city’s first mayor.
Leander was originally called Bagdad when people first settled there around 1845, after receiving bounty land grants for their service in the Texas Revolution. They were attracted to the area’s abundant water and timber. Due to frequent attacks by Indians, the Texas Rangers were brought in for protection and constructed a building to house 60 men, providing one of the first buildings of Williamson County.
With residents making their own clothing and growing most of their own food, farming was soon the backbone of the area. Being a stop along the stagecoach line between Austin and Lampass provided settlers with the opportunity to have goods from Austin delivered to them.
When lots were sold by the railroad and the town was officially established in 1882, it was renamed Leander in honor of railroad official Leander Brown.
