Lakeway, TX - Travis County     Population (2000 Census): 8,002 Lakeway is a 1,200-acre village located on Lake Travis, 5 miles west of Mansfield Dam in west Travis County. It was incorporated in July, 1974, when property owners in the community voted to do so and gained permission from the City of Austin. The governing commission consisted of a three person commission, one of whom was the community’s first mayor, Newt Herndon. Lakeway was founded on a 2,700 acre ranch owned by Jack (Jake) Josey. An option to buy the land for a planned hotel and resort community was acquired in 1962. The name Lakeway was derived from the Lakeway Land Corporation, which was created for the development of real estate in the area. Property sales of the corporation started in May, 1963, followed by the July opening of the Lakeway Inn & Marina.
