Kyle, TX - Hays County

Population (2000 Census): 5,314
Kyle is located 20 miles south of Austin in northeastern Hays County. The town was named for Fergus Kyle, whom, along with David E. Moore, deeded two hundred acres for the town’s site to the International-Great Northern Railroad. Kyle was established on July 24, 1880, and attracted settlers from Mountain City and Blanco.
Kyle was originally incorporated in 1895. After two years, it was apparently decided that this had been a bad idea. Over a decade later in 1906, Kyle was incorporated for the second time.
Kyle was set-up as a general-law city with a mayor and council members. Fergus Kyle’s daughter, Mary Kyle Hartson, was elected mayor in 1937. Kyle had the distinction of being Texas’ only town with an all-female government in the early 1940’s.
The area went through a large building boom in the mid-1980’s. In the early 1990’s, Kyle had a population of 2,256, along with 79 businesses.
