Hutto, TX - Williamson County

Population (2000 Census): 1,250
Hutto is located 20 miles northeast of Austin in eastern Williamson County. It was founded in 1855 and incorporated in 1940. The city was named for James Emory Hutto, a wealthy cattleman who sold five acres of land to the International-Great Northern Railroad in 1876, and became postmaster in 1877.
Residents were drawn to Hutto in the 1890’s when it was touted as an “important cotton market” by the Texas State Gazetteer. Grain was another major export. In the late 1920’s, the city was devastated by the Great Depression and decline of the cotton industry, causing its population to fall from a pre-depression 900 in 1928 to 538 in 1931. Hutto’s population grew and the community revived between 1970 and the late 1980’s.
One of Hutto’s draws as a community is its small-town lifestyle.
