Del Valle, TX - Travis County

Population (1990 - approx.): 300
Del Valle is located 7 miles southeast of Austin along the Colorado River in southeastern Travis County. Its name was derived from Santiago Del Valle, whose land grant the community was built upon and established in the mid-1870’s.
During the 1880’s, Del Valle had blossomed and had several churches, a school, a general store, 2 cotton gins, and a steam gristmill. Local farmers shipped cotton and grain, which were the staple crops of the area. Impacted by the Great Depression, the population of Del Valle dropped from about 150 to 25 in the early 1930’s. The building of Bergstrom Air Force Base, which was then called Del Valle Army Air Field, helped the area’s population increase from 1942 through the following decades.
While the number of businesses in Del Valle increased by more than double from 12 in 1970, to 35 in 1990, the population remained stable at approximately 300 through that same time period.
