Buda, TX - Hays County

Population (2000 Census): 2,404
Buda is a city located 17 miles south of downtown Austin in northeastern Hays County. Established April 1, 1881, the area was originally part of a Mexican land grant and had been donated for a town site. The town’s name of Buda was adopted in 1887. It is commonly believed that the name derives from the Spanish word “viuda” – meaning “widow”, possibly in reference to two widows who cooked at the Carrington Hotel during that time period, when the town had a reputation as a stop for rail travelers to eat.
Buda’s economy was based on supplying provisions to area dairy farms and ranches, as well as various mills, banks, hotels, a cheese factory, lumberyard, and press. The town thrived until the Great Depression, when the population dropped to half of the 600 residents it had boasted in 1929.
The town of Buda was incorporated in 1948 and by the 1980’s, with Austin’s substantial growth, Buda finally regained the population levels it had in the 1920’s. With some industry, the town is predominantly rural residential. Its Main Street still holds its “olde time” look, with antique shopping in original buildings.
